Do not stop at the only visit to Ostuni, but continue your journey to discover the wonderful landscape of Apulia. Within twenty kilometers there are many small villages that are like hidden gold nuggets that are waiting for nothing but being caught. Between a relaxing bath and a walk through the beautiful beaches, enjoy a day discovering places that exude history and desire to tell.
The small town is full of remains of the ancient walls, the acropolis and many well-preserved archaeological remains. Walking through the wonderful streets of Carovigno, you can not help but visit all the churches, each one different from the other and very characteristic of the place. Just outside the city there is also the sanctuary of the Most Holy Mary of Belvedere, with a visitable crypt. Still inside, however, one can not help but notice the medieval buildings.
The city has 14 towers and 2 castles, truly fascinating for those who love this kind of structures. The castle of Dentice di Frasso rises on the highest point of the city and consists of three towers, dated between the twelfth and fifteenth centuries. Like all medieval cities that respect each other, there are also all the gates to access the city to visit. Finally, the squares can not be missing, as the most classic of tourist visit places.
A second hidden wonder is the small village of Locorotondo. Despite only its 14 thousand inhabitants, this gem is a destination for many tourists who pass through Apulia. Initially it was called Casale San Giorgio (in honor of the patron saint), then Casale Rotondo, later Luogorotondo and only in 1834 it was called Locorotondo. The toponym recalls the characteristic shape of the historic center, a group of small white houses arranged on concentric rings, forming a real circle.
Inside, the beautiful churches await you, especially the mother church of San Giorgio martire, with original bas-reliefs and a crypt. Walking through the internal streets, you have the opportunity to see live the spectacular and unique buildings typical of Apulia: the trulli and the cummerse. While the former have more information, the cummerse are sloping roofs built with dry stones, a veritable spectacle for the eyes.
Finally, the visit of the bell tower of the mother church, able to give a suggestive view, deserves some time.
With about 40 thousand inhabitants, Fasano is a fairly populated municipality in the area. The beauty of these wonderful countries lies in the fact that each of them is different from the other. Differentiation is a feature that makes them even more fascinating. In addition to the many different churches contained within it, Fasano is characterized by the style of the historic center. In dialect called U'mbracchie, word derived from the Latin umbraculum meaning shade. In fact, its narrow lanes in white lime, typical of the southern centers, do not allow the sun to beat, thus ensuring the freshness for most of the day.
The pride of the center is the white Ciaia square with the two main courses covered in local chianca, the clock and the sumptuous palaces, real architectural riches, the arch of the Balì, the arcades of the Teresiane (an ancient 16th century convent become today a suggestive commercial gallery) and the Balì palace (currently the town hall) behind which a small square called Piazza Mercato Vecchio opens up. From the narrow streets of the historic center, moreover, you can reach the tower of the Fogge, the only surviving tower of the ancient city walls, which surrounded the city in the 17th century.
Outside the city, there are not to be missed the archaeological museum and an archaeological site not very famous but of rare beauty: the dolben of montalbano. Dating back to the early Bronze Age, the structure is still firm despite the years and the tampering of time. The dolmen represents one of the earliest memorials of the period in the area. Also known as "Tavola dei Paladini", it can be easily reached along the road, towards the sea, in the Fasano-Ostuni stretch in the "Occhio Piccolo" area.
Do not miss the opportunity to visit other magical places and unique in the world as Alberobello and Polignano a mare.
