Matera is the Capital of Culture of 2019 - a year full of events, exhibitions and cultural productions, just a hundred kilometers from Tenuta Mastro Francesco
The famous "Città dei Sassi" is an incredible rock landscape developed from the natural caves carved into the rock and subsequently modeled in increasingly complex structures within two large natural amphitheatres, called Sasso Caveoso and Sasso Barisano. Declared in 1993 as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, Matera is the sixth site in Italy in chronological order and the first in the South.
Place of border, of contrasts, of competition and fusion between landscapes, cultures, different civilizations, from the civilization of modus vivendi in cave to that of Byzantine and oriental matrix, to the advent of Normanni, Matera becomes in 2019 the Capital of Italian Culture offering to visitors a dense agenda of cultural events.
Themes of cultural projects
"Città dei Sassi" becomes a real cultural hub for Italy, around which many events revolve. The themes dealt with throughout the year are five: Remote Future, which opens a profound reflection on the millenarian relationship between man and nature; Continuity and Ruptures, a theme current and ancient at the same time, inherent in the city of Matera and in many European cities, which face increasing social inequalities and a crumbling future; Reflections and Connections, makes us rediscover the value of time and slowness in a world that lives at a constantly accelerated pace; Utopias and Dystopias, a theme rich in innovation and imagination that transforms Matera into a field of experimentation; Roots and Paths finally explores the theme of departure, but also of the return to the values of southern culture.

Inauguration 19 January 2019
On Saturday 19 January the inaugural ceremony of Matera, the city of culture 2019, was held. The date was marked with a red circle on all the Lucan calendars, as it would have been one of the most important days of the year. Finally it has arrived and the public called to gather, the whole city has responded to the greatest. This is how the most important year in the history of this marvelous city opened up at the quarry of the sun. The choice of such a suggestive place for the opening ceremony was not accidental. In fact, the location has allowed to better admire the thousands of lights that have lit Matera: the lights made by citizens in the Lumen project, the bag light produced in the class of the Open Design School, or simple candles that poetically underline the beauty of the Sasso Barisano. The opening to the Cava del Sole, an evocative place that takes its name from the Church of the Sun, a monastic rupestrian settlement from the Middle Ages, redeveloped precisely for Matera 2019, saw 14 bands alternating until the record performance of L 'hymn to joy with 2019 elements. In an armored city, in the presence of Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte and eagerly waiting for the evening party with the arrival of the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella, everything was done in the best way with a truly unique show.
Visit Matera
The historic center of Matera is located on a plateau that delimits the Sassi of Matera high and shows the different levels of overlapping urban strata: in the Central Piazza Vittorio Veneto, for example, dominates the Great Palazzo dell'Annunziata, former convent of the Provincial Library, and there are some openings that show the original level of the places, today called hypogea, which lie below the same square. From Piazza del Sedile up Via Duomo you reach the Cathedral dating back to 1270 flanked by a majestic bell tower that dominates the entire landscape of the city. Around the Cathedral there are the palaces of the families with noble titles that lived there, erected in such a way as to constitute defense garrisons of the mother church, such as Palazzo Gattini, Palazzo Venusio and Palazzo Malvini Malvezzi.
The Sassi are further enriched by the charm of the rock churches, mystical places where religiosity has determined the evolution of human life, lived in rooms carved into the rock, often endowed with refined architectural decorations and fascinating frescoes with elements of oriental art. In the two districts of the Sassi, Caveoso and Barisano, it is possible to visit many rupestrian churches characterized by different peculiarities: the imposing San Pietro Barisano, often used for musical concerts, the variety and richness in the iconography of Santa Lucia alle Malve. Of great charm and charm, the rupestrian complex of the Convicinio di Sant'Antonio welcomes visitors through an elegant portal that leads into a rectangular courtyard, overlooked by four churches with different characteristics. Sasso Caveoso dominates the rocky mass of the Monterrone, inside which there are the churches of Santa Maria de Idris and San Giovanni, which form, through an internal tunnel, a single church complex.
